The anticipation about this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious image of a strange statue. The mystery is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a brand-new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer featuring intense imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very unleashing of hell.
Not the Expected Sequel
For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio warned that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.
Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This distinction hints that the team could be building a real-time experience as opposed to another turn-based title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a announcement clip is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it kicked off the contemporary revival of complex computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, player agency, and flexible progression—qualities that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of specialized paths you can achieve by choosing a particular class or origin with a personal story.
The series is also wonderfully permissive, letting players to improvise both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be approached in multiple ways, sometimes in surprising fashion.
- You might find an answer because you heeded something a dog told you.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.
More to Come
It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, fans can anticipate a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
