Right-leaning reactions to the partial release of documents involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent presence of former President Clinton and additional Democrats in images, while others lamented how heavy censorship cast former President Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.
Administration Justifies Redactions with Strong Rhetoric
Administration officials justified the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “Never in American history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this transparent with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a detailed letter outlining the redaction process.
Questions Raised by Redactions
While Trump's identity and likeness appear in some of the materials, the widespread black blocks prompt serious concerns about the information may be hidden behind them. Some conservative lawmakers immediately called for increased openness.
“People are furious and walking away,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the censorship break the statute, and suggested that a future legislature may attempt to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, this document release grossly does not comply with both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he added.
A Faction of Conservative Commentators Swing In Support of the Disclosure
But, a segment of rightwing commentators and Trump allies came out strongly in support of the administration.
The disclosed materials—originating from a DOJ run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of documents that are entirely redacted, and numerous of the individuals depicted in photographs have their faces blacked out.
Yet some are not, featuring high-profile figures like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, allowed certain rightwing figures to go on the offensive.
“This is quite ironic how the Democrats wrongly accused Donald Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Statement
Clinton has consistently stated he was aware of no criminal activity by Epstein and has not been alleged to have participated in any misconduct. “The administration has not been concealing those files for an extended period only to dump them at the last minute on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“This is about shielding officials from what comes next, or from information they’ll try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality decades-old photographs as they desire, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the response added.
Overall Conservative Commentary Seems Subdued
However, overall comment on the political right was comparatively muted following the release, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous demands for transparency that came before the congressional approval to pass a bill mandating the documents' publication.
The commentator, who not long ago accepted press credentials at the Pentagon, had been among the loudest proponents for a full release. In February, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi in particular after a set of rightwing influencers were given hard-copy binders of materials that included little new data.
