Nepal's Political Landscape Sees Major Partnership Formed Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the Fresh Electoral Partnership

According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Taking Place

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of major political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
