Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed typically studies BLS data to determine employment trends, including the count of new jobs created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of positions added to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release when the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that showed that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
