The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
